Terms such as digitalization, digital transformation and new work are euphonious descriptions for the current and biggest change in the modern working world since industrialization almost 200 years ago. Companies are currently facing completely new challenges – not least due to the global pandemic. But in order to determine the degree of implementation of the measures and the success of the investments made, it is necessary to take a critical look at the key indicators set and, above all, at the results in relation to them.

The will to spend more to further fuel digital transformation was confirmed by almost all companies in the Telekom study, even nearly the majority want to increase this further in the coming years to boost productivity. Other studies also conclude that internal efficiency in one’s own organization is the most important key factor in the area of digitalization (Digitalization 2020: Staufen AG). What is missing, however, is a look at the effectiveness of the measures introduced. An online survey by Corps New Media in 2020 came to the conclusion that 48% of the more than 1,000 employees surveyed in the study would like support or training on the topic of new work, as they were overwhelmed.

Possibilities for remedying this situation would be expensive and time-consuming training courses and instructional material that is costly to produce and needs to be revised in order to familiarize users with the possibilities and functions of the software that has been introduced. This, in turn, would result in renewed investment and the opposite effect: production downtime, inefficiency and an additional burden on IT and other departments. After all, digitalization or digital transformation and new work are not just digital projects that can be implemented in a few months, but existential philosophies that require a rethink of the entire corporate structure. Short-thought interim solutions and shaky workarounds are no longer sufficient for this and are potential risk factors.
